The attitude of this blog reveals that experience and mentorship is valued in place of teacher training courses. While teacher training courses are available via the USAG, it is only a supplement, and a small one at that. In some ways it makes sense that in a competitive sport, coaches take on the aire of “been there, done that” and that gives them the credibility to take someone to a competition. It is recommended by the industry and common for a coach to have more than 10 years of experience prior to entering full time coaching. A Pilates instructor writes the following: “You cannot teach something you do not know and you cannot know it unless you commit to ongoing practice.” I find it interesting that with sports such as gymnastics, it is more common to find teachers not engaged in the practice, and that’s when they are called “coaches.” The word coach has a different connotation than teacher and to me, implies that they are done with the sport themselves, and now they are turning a new leaf to coach.
While aerial dance is just as athletic as gymnastics in my opinion, I feel that it is leans in a different direction in the way. Gymnastics seem to wreck your body and then you’re done (while admitting there are always exceptions to the rule!). Circus seems to be more of a lifelong activity. You’ll find plenty of people in their 50s, 60s, and up still engaged in the fun of the circus, where aerial dance has its roots. It’s more of an ongoing lifelong activity, and so instructors are just as much engaged as their students. Rather than coaches who no longer do the sport, aerial instructors are going to be just as much engaged as their students, so it makes sense that the way that they progress into teaching is going to be very different. There’s no such thing as someone taking a 2 week teacher training course and now they are going to coach a gymnastics student to the regional competition. You have to live and breath the industry for years. Simple as that.
ABT (American Ballet Theater) is well-known in the world of Ballet. Did you know you could become certified in ABT Ballet? As long as you meet the necessary skill level, you can get certified in as little as 9 days. This prepares you for teaching children ages 3 and up and you can be as young as 17 years old. A 6 day course prepares teachers to instruct intermediate and advanced ballet students age 11 – 13+. And another 6 day course prepares teachers to instruct advanced and pre-professional ballet students ages 14+. May I emphasis the skill level which allows someone to do this is not beginner, not intermediate, barely advanced. The skill level required to enter the program is advanced and professional.
In the United States, it is very common for dance teachers to receive a masters degree in fine arts from an accredited institution. This degree typically takes about 5 years or more and typically costs anywhere from $40,000-100,000+ depending on what college you attend. Many dance teachers go on to teach at dance studios or in the public or private school system, at levels ranging from elementary school PE to high school dance teams to college dance companies (or being a professor of dance). It is an interesting mix to say the least. Within the same dance studio, you may have someone with no college experience (qualified simply due to natural talent) teaching next to someone with a masters degree. The main thing that the local dance studio cares about is that the teacher can dance and they can teach. Credentials are great, but experience is valued even more within dance studios. In the school system, you absolutely must have your masters degree in order to teach, so that is why so many dancers receive theirs. It keeps doors open for job opportunities.
10,000 HOUR RULE
It is certainly a hard question to answer: What is an adequate length of time to train a teacher? Those who value their art form of teaching may cringe at the suggestion of two weeks. How can someone conquer the art of [fill in the blank with any art form] in 2 weeks if it wasn’t already in them? I remember Debbie Park (my aerial mentor) once telling me that it takes 10 years to become an expert at anything. I have also recently encountered the 10,000 hour rule.
The 10,000 Hour Rule is the idea that it takes approximately 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to master a skill. For instance, it would take 10 years of practicing 3 hours a day to become a master in your subject. It would take approximately 5 years of full-time employment to become proficient in your field. (hmm…sounds like gymnastics coaches perhaps?)
It really is experience more than anything that will make a teacher blossom. I think that a solid teacher training program includes many hours of practice, as well as time for the teacher to grow to a place where they are confident in the skills. It is likely that a teacher may begin teaching while they are still a student of the craft themselves. It is not practical to require every student be practicing their art for 10 years prior to considering teaching. They simply must be a few steps (of course the more the better) ahead of their students, in recognition that it is all one big continuum of learning at the end of the day.
A wonderful yoga practitioner had the following to say on the subject at hand, “I believe people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. I care because this practice, this community cares for me. This same care will lead me to the [knowledge I need]. .. I am a student forever, hopefully well beyond 10,000 hours, but today I teach by the minute.”
YOUR TURN
Do you think the aerial dance industry should have teacher training programs that are so common they become necessary part of the industry? What is the ideal length? How long should a teacher be practicing in the aerial arts before they take a teacher training? Lots of room for a million opinions!
Interesting subject. I have wondered with my school, what is my goal? I’m a mother, married, rooted to be blunt. I’m not joining the circus. But to teach, maybe. Another aspect that you didn’t really touch on is performance. As with Ballet or gymnastics you will have performed at sometime, isn’t that how to obtain your street credit? Would I feel confident in learning from an aerialist that has never performed? Beside the two week speedy learner, I’ve heard of a teacher verbally walking you through drops and never showing you first hand, like a coach. Would you feel safe doing a drop never having it been demonstrated? Are you that confident that the Aerialist knows what they’re talking about? In my opinion, I think a teacher should have both. I think we need a standard like with Yoga and a mentorship like with Dance. Fortunately aerial circus arts have become more accessable and with that we need to be able to tell the difference between the ‘fake it until we make it’ and the professional. Honestly I didn’t do too much research into my school and lucked out with a very competent and professional aerialist. I have also heard about the two week speedy student starting up their own discipline and thank God that I didn’t end up there. People are taking huge leaps from yoga to aerial yoga to aerials as we’ve all seen on YouTube. It’s nerve racking at times to see them wrapped in a drop with not nearly the clearance and thankfully see them walk out. But what happens when they teach that to that spirited student who goes to the next step? Ah, to answer your question, I like the 200 contact hours (like yoga) with a year of prior experience (like dance).
I have had discussions with other aerial teachers on this topic. I have been teaching yoga for 7 + plus years and hold my certification and training invaluable. I wish there was an aerial certification 4 years ago when I started teaching, although my previous teaching experiences helped me to structure a class and focus on safety and be confident with an organized lesson plan.
I feel that there should be aerial teacher training programs ongoing to keep aerial arts safe and to develop a similar lineage of skills and movement vocabulary.
It’s tricky to number the amount of time for an aerialist to be a teacher, it depends on there practice level, consistency, and passion. I also think some aerialists similar to yoga philosophy may not want to be a teacher, but do want to advance their own personal practice and want to take a training for self development. I suppose the minimum amount of time would be 3 years and again that would depend on their skill level and consistency with the dedication to practice and desire to teach.
I also feel that teacher training programs should be 3-6 months long and there should be a required amount of hours of apprenticing.
Here are just a few topics that could be covered:
Aerial technique & teaching method
Aerial history & Philosophy
Practical Anatomy for aerialists
demonstration & cuing
planning & sequencing classes
profession & business ethics
working with students with injuries & special conditions
Also important to have lots of practice teaching sessions and observation of other qualified aerial classes.
Thanks for bringing up this topic, excited to read more insightful opinions.
all love,
Jem
Teaching, per Se, DOES NOT come naturally to some people. As a public school teacher (former)some of my best students are teachers. I have also sat under instructors that have the knowledge but lack severely in the transfer of knowledge. Honestly, if I am given a curriculum I can tell or “sale” anything. It’s in the delivery. There fore the curriculum for any of the above listed needs to be “tigh”tight, thoroughly explained with given criteria “. Perspective instructors should sit under someone’s instruction before striking out on their own. But we all know that isn’t going to happen unless the organization’s given the certifications make it mandatory. IMHO
Sorry….this is long
I am so glad to see more programs and talk of teacher training skills for aerial arts coming from caring instructors who want to better the future of the aerial community.
When I began taking lessons in Aerial about 5 years ago, i loved the idea of performing but teaching seemed out of reach since I figured you had to be fully certified by a circus school with x amount of years to do so.
I had been training with my instructors as a student for about 2.5 years then but only with about 1-2 days a week and had recently gotten my own equipment but had few places to rig at, I was really concerned with safety in rigging and asked lots of questions of my instructor. Her info was very helpful but I had yet to actually work with or take a lesson from a qualified rigger.
I am thankful that there are some rigging courses and aerial specific details taught more these days! I have gained much info from trusted riggers and performers since I began. And love when I see that a program requires that type of class from a rigger.
I started helping a few friends learn aerial for fun at a local warehouse, it was not paid but everyone who could chipped in to afford the rent to use the space there and the crash mat they had bought for the space. I had realized how much I loved teaching silks then. I had some decent knowledge and knew quite a list of moves and conditioning exercises but little mastery at the time. I had to train more. But where, when?
When I got a sudden opportunity to teach and train at a location I could keep my silks up at, I took it, thinking only of how wonderful it would be to share with others what I grew to love and train more often as well. In hindsight, I was not ready, but I was willing to work really hard to gain all the info I could to keep my students safe, breaking down moves, doing them slower and more controlled and talking myself though them as I went to train for teaching.
Like many others I’ve met, I had little comparison of what other aerial arts teachers where like outside of my region where there were only 2 places that taught it in my state and one was too far from me to just go check out on a day trip. There are quite a few more now as local pole studios started joining in on the Aerial popularity. But again, not too many with years of experience and teacher training in those aerial arts.
With little resources and very limited funds I jumped in but tried to research all I could from any source possible to keep my students safe but interested.
The big thing was, I didn’t feel I understood proper progressions. I taught similar to how I had been taught. A couple simpler moves and climbs per class after a warm up and conditioning but there was not a lot of time spent developing each move. You learned it, we cheered, and then moved on with the occasional review time a few weeks later. More of a recreational fitness approach than helping others attain a better grasp on technique of a skill.
Over time I finally was able to visit other studios out of state and even in another country to see the similarities and differences in what is expected of teachers/students in different regions.
My teacher training became working with other teachers. I would privately train with someone that I felt was very informative, I would ask how to help my students better attain certain basic skills instead of just focusing on the new moves I wanted to learn. So I could come home as a better instructor with even just some simpler skills I felt could enhance their aerial training as well as mine.
When I came across NECCA’s programs, it was recommended by an instructor in another state, I was thrilled to learn that I could get actual certification for this art form that I had grown to adore most of all in life.
I have begun the series of courses to getting their full certification in aerial fabric but with only being able to afford one trip and class fee to a training location per year, it will take me another 2-4 years to complete it all in just one of my disciplines. However, my goal is to continue to travel a few times a year and take multiple lessons from many whom are considered great instructors in both teacher training methods and personal technique as that aspect of it interests me most. I want to be vocal and active in the future of aerial teacher trainings once I am at the level of expertise to do so.
However, they do not offer any Lyra courses until you are at the 3rd level of their training so I am thankful to have your book to study currently as another experienced perspective on the techniques. Hopefully I can attend one of your teacher trainings some day too as I believe you can gain so much from discussing teaching methods with others who have good standards and practices.
Also, there are some very talented performers out there who seem like they have so much to offer but maybe aren’t versed in how to instruct or spot properly, it’s often hard for students to distinguish between the two. They assume if you perform something impressive, you must be a great teacher of it too. But that’s not always the case.
I am not the most highly polished performer by far, as I have much less time to work on my personal goals for performance since I tend to put more focus on my goals of becoming the best trainer/teacher I can be. I’ve become more experienced in freestyle/improv type performance since I spend more time breaking down moves, doing a sequence over and over and studying sections, and helping my students build routines then creating full solo acts for myself. I am thankful to be in a troupe that performs duo/trio work though cause that can fulfill my desire for act creation.
Teaching is what I feel I can do for life. Help others find that joy, stay fit and balanced, gain confidence, and feel accomplished with what they have trained their body to achieve.
There is a need for more teacher training programs and I’m glad you’re starting to move in that direction more and more!
I am very excited to see what the future of aerial teacher training has to bring. Plus hopefully become a more active part of that process like you have once I am certified and have a few more years of vast knowledge and experience to share to the next generation of aerialists and teachers.
I hope to be able to meet you and other like-minded teachers in the future!
Great thread, I love reading all the responses.
I think it depends on how the class is being taught. For example, if the fabric is being used for aerial yoga or a method of alternative fitness then I don’t think the teacher needs to have performed anywhere. They should still have at least 1-2 years experience themselves, know basic safety and rigging and be auditioned by professionals to qualify.
BUT if it’s being taught as part of a circus type class, then it’s no longer just about being able to do the move, it’s an art form. Teachers should preferably have backgrounds in dance so they can also teach choreography. Safety is also more of an issue here because the apparatus can be higher and people are more likely to try more advanced tricks. I think there should also be a short trial teaching period after the training, where you are evaluated by another professional.
So while I would like to see more aerial teacher training programs, I don’t think they should be so commonplace that any enthusiast could become one by taking a 50 hour course.
As with most of the posts above, I agree that we need to have set standards and a level of competency +/- a certification for people to teach aerial. My dilemma is that while I love the aerial arts, the community, performing and teaching, it is not my full time profession, nor do I plan to become a full time aerial instructor. It is exceedingly difficult to find the time and money to complete a 2 week teacher certification course, let alone one that would require months of training. Perhaps hours spent in practice could be accepted in lieu of some of the required training for certification. Then that raises the questions of – who are you practicing with? What are their qualifications to teach aerial? How long have they been teaching, performing, etc.?
I began learning aerial in an area where there was no access to a large studio or professional instructors, but we did as many workshops as possible with prof. aerialists to improve our skills and technique. Our group had varied backgrounds in gymnastics, dance, sports and medical professions, so it provided for a good mix of technique, choreo and injury prevention skills and we always stress proper form and technique in our teaching and practices. One of the biggest concerns with non-certified instructors is that they are not aware of proper form or how to prevent injury when teaching new moves.
I think a large part of what makes someone a good aerial instructor is knowing their own strengths and limitations and knowing when to say “I don’t know” or “I don’t feel comfortable with teaching that.” I have students who are far more flexible in some areas and can perform moves that are physically impossible for me (outside of dislocating a hip). Knowing enough about the dynamics and physical stresses of the move, I feel comfortable with verbally instructing, rather than actually demonstrating it (because I need to be able to walk the next day). Perhaps this falls more into the category of coaching than teaching? What about the aerial instructors who don’t demo moves at all? There’s a lot of blurred lines in the industry that need to be clarified so that standards can be set for the aerial community as a whole. A new instructor with 15 years of dance experience, but only 6 months of aerial may be more qualified to teach than someone who has 2-3 years of experience in aerial (with no previous background in dance, gymnastics, etc), but how do we judge the level of expertise and qualification?
Perhaps we need to get multiple professionals from the aerial community together to form an association that will set the standards for teaching qualifications and teacher certification programs. Until we have set standards in place, I think the question of who is really qualified to instruct in aerial will still be raised. That being said, any kind of certification program is certainly better than nothing and I will continue to search for workshops and training programs (within my schedule and budget) to improve my skills as an aerialist and as an instructor!
I love this conversation and appreciate the thinking that is going on here. I speak as a person who has spent 15 years as a competitive gymnast then a circus performer/aerialist for another 15. I am an aerial teacher, yogi and mentor. I hire many teachers and coaches and must say that it is a very specific set of skills that make a teacher or coach great.
Anyone can learn something and then teach it to someone else. The true teacher will teach their students how to Learn. This is the foundation for anything including the ancient African proverb “from one thing know 10,000 things”.
I say this to make sure that we all agree that there is no one way to success. People learn in there own way…. some are very technical and like to break things down and analyze the mechanics… others can watch a skill and see how something feels as they see it. Still others must do 1000 repetitions and make adjustments to get it just so. But the successful athletes or artists will begin to understand how they learn and lock it in. A great coach will understand that and treat each student uniquely and train them in the way that best suits them.
Now when we are talking about Aerial Acrobatics, (which by the way is no where near as difficult as high level gymnastics) we must take into account the inherent danger of the situation that we are putting ourselves in. We must completely understand our equipment and how it is attached to whatever is holding it up (this takes experience). We must prepare our body to handle the forces that it will experience during the particular skill or activity (this takes time and training) and we must understand the mechanics of what we are attempting to do as well as what the potential pitfalls are and the associated consequences (again experience is paramount). Of course some people are very in tune with their inner-monkey and will have a natural propensity to swing and twist and hold themselves in strange positions, but over time a consistent and disciplined approach will lead to a much more elegant and refined aerialist.
At our school we attempt to teach a foundational approach to our aerial acrobatics. We develop a strong, flexible body and train students minds to understand their relationship to gravity and the earth by exposing them to tumbling, handstands and trampoline. We build core strength and arm strength to ensure that students are able to handle their body weight effectively with AIReal yoga. We teach climbs and foot locks before getting into inversions. We find that aerial is very much self-regulating in that students cannot progress very far without these foundational building blocks. So the going tends to be very slow at first. But as an aerialist moves into the intermediate levels they tend to progress very quickly. Usually in 2 years.

Copper extrusion scrap buyer Copper is a highly sought after metal in various industries due to its excellent properties and versatility. It is widely used in electrical and construction industries, as well as in the manufacture of consumer goods and industrial machinery. Copper consumption has seen a steady rise in recent years, driven by growing demand from emerging economies and advancements in technology that require more copper production. The global copper consumption has been on a steady rise since the 1980s, with global consumption now around 24 million metric tons annually. Asia is the largest consumer of copper, accounting for over 50% of global consumption. China, in particular, is the largest consumer of copper, consuming around 11 million metric tons annually. The electrical industry is the largest consumer of copper by far, accounting for over half of all copper consumption. Copper is used in the manufacture of electrical wires, motors, transformers, and other electrical components. The construction industry comes in second, accounting for around a quarter of total consumption. Copper is widely used in plumbing, roofing, and building embellishments. Copper also finds extensive use in the automotive, aerospace, and telecommunications industries. Its excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, as well as its durability and resistance to corrosion, make it a popular choice in these sectors. The world has witnessed the introduction of electric vehicles, which are anticipated to increase the demand for copper production. Electric cars are expected to contain four times the amount of copper used in regular cars. The demand for copper is expected to increase as more countries invest in infrastructure construction, renewable energy generation, and electric vehicle production. Copper is a critical element in new technologies such as solar panels and wind turbines. The transition to renewable energy sources globally is anticipated to drive demand for copper in the coming years. In conclusion, copper consumption has been on a steady rise in recent years due to the increasing demand in various industries. Copper scrap cleaning There are several copper alloys that are commonly used in electrical applications. The selection of the alloy depends on the specific requirements of the application, such as electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties. One of the most common alloys used in electrical conductors is copper-beryllium (CuBe), which has high strength, good electrical conductivity, and excellent fatigue resistance. However, beryllium is a toxic material and requires special handling. Another widely used alloy is copper-tin (CuSn), which has good corrosion resistance and high wear resistance. It is often used in electrical contacts and switches. Copper-nickel (CuNi) is another popular choice for electrical applications, particularly in marine environments due to its excellent corrosion resistance. It also has good electrical conductivity and can withstand high temperatures. Copper-silver (CuAg) is an alloy with high electrical conductivity and is often used in electrical contacts and connectors. It is also resistant to oxidation and corrosion. In general, the choice of copper alloy for an electrical application depends on a number of factors, including the specific requirements of the application and the cost of the material Scrap metal reclaiming yard Copper scrap resale value Copper scrap volume forecasting Copper scrap industry knowledge Copper scrap commerce Metal scrap storage
